“As I looked out into the night sky, across all those infinite stars, it made me realize how insignificant they are.” ~ Peter Cook

The story of Rick…
(You’ll see this plant again soon.)

Rick had never gone windsurfing before, not a day in his life.
But he set sail with his goal to see the world. We said our goodbyes and marked our calendars for when he’d return.

Rick returned two minutes later because he had to pee, not knowing he could release it to the sea. The boy was so green – ah, so much to learn, let him be. I brought my lunch and assumed to see him back again that same day with little faith he’d be gone longer. Well, unless things turned, and in that case, we’d see him years later as decay.

Off, off he went… 20, 30, 40 yards out.

There he remained.
“Rick! What the heck! Keep going… Canada is not far away. Go with the wind, my lad. Or at least, move a tad!” And with that, a strong wind came and wiped him away. Seriously, I blinked, and he was gone.

Not knowing what to do – I decided to build a house on the sand. I now had so much time on my hands and was keen on getting tanned. At that moment, another wind swept by, dropping off some wood right where I stood. This happened a few times in installments of two, just enough for me to handle, but it never brought me glue.

So I just piled them up like this.

Two months went by, nice enough, still no sign of Rick. I’d been eating these things feeling fabulous and then sick.

The plants started to talk to me, and I heard the sand laugh. The birds came at dawn and gave me crap. My sight became blurry, but my thoughts were never so clear. Apparently, I had stayed too long waiting, so I left. That’s that, but I lingered for one more nap.

Home again, safe and sound. I took my boat out for a spin, fit for a family of ten. Ten ants, to be exact. Just us out on the river, just us and now my wet pants… thanks to a large boat that had flown by drowning every ant leaving only a fly. On we two roamed, all through the day. Not a care in the world forgetting all about Rick, who was somewhere, perhaps alive, or not, and still out at sea.

And then all the sudden – bursting out of the water – I saw something, what in the… was it an otter? Binoculars out, I zoomed in and started to shout, “It’s Rick!!” Uh oh, he’s back. Now I have to explain why I burned the shack, got rid of his belongings, and never looked back.

  1. To the author –

Are you feeling ok? Have you experienced any of the following:

    Fever
    Headache
    Muscle aches and backache
    Swollen lymph nodes
    Chills
    Exhaustion
Respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough)
A rash that can look like pimples or blisters that appears on the face, inside the mouth, and on other parts of the body, like the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or anus.

Any recent contact with monkeys or other simians?
    Any unexplained cravings for bananas?

If so, I recommend that you seek immediate medical attention, and show this blog entry to the doctor and ask to be evaluated for delirium, encephalopathy, or meningitis.
